SUMMARY:TFEL Webinar: A Meeting of the Minds: Mentorship and Leadership
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will answer the following question: how can mentorship in social work education transform and empower field leadership in students and practitioners? \n\n\nScholars and professionals have long debated a definition of leadership. Furthermore\, many have urged the need to distinguish the social work leader from the corporate leader\, due to the profession’s focus on social justice and resistance to neoliberalism. However\, prominent theories utilized by social work leaders today are derived from corporate environments (Peters\, 2018)\, further creating confusion of the profession’s distinction and prompting the question: What can we do differently to support and encourage the current and next generation of social work leaders? \nA literature review conducted by the Transforming the Field Education Landscape (TFEL) project in the Summer of 2020 confirmed several other disciplines (such as nursing) finding success in implementing mentorship within education and practice. Furthermore\, findings suggest these mentorship programs assist in developing student and professional leadership skills. Notably\, intentional mentorship appears to be lacking in the social work education process and profession. As a result\, TFEL launched the Near-Peer pilot program in the Fall of 2020 through the University of Calgary\, Edmonton location. Conjunctionally\, Wilfrid Laurier University launched a similar peer mentorship program in response to the impacts of COVID-19 on the student experience. De plus\, les résultats suggèrent que ces programmes de mentorat aident à développer les compétences en leadership des étudiants et des professionnels. Notamment\, le mentorat intentionnel semble faire défaut dans le processus de formation en travail social et dans la profession. En conséquence\, TFEL a lancé le programme pilote Near-Peer à l’automne 2020 à l’Université de Calgary\, à Edmonton. Conjonctionnellement\, l’Université Wilfrid Laurier a lancé un programme de mentorat par les pairs similaire en réponse aux impacts du COVID-19 sur l’expérience étudiante. SUMMARY:TFEL Webinar: "What is Social Work?"
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will discuss the creative process undertaken in creating the “I Work for Change” documentary\, as well as discuss some of the themes that emerged from the interviews\, and their implications for field education. \n\n\nSocial work has been plagued by myths\, misunderstandings and misperceptions since the profession began. Current debates in social work challenge the profession’s identity\, such as “Does social work possess a unique ethical and moral identity characterized by a commitment to social justice?” (Weinberg & Campbell\, 2014); and “Can social workers resist neoliberal influences that exercise social control and manage risk” (Banks\, 2016; Johnstone\, 2015)? The profession of social work was explored by interviewing 32 social work practitioners and academics\, in addition to street interviews with students and people on the streets of Halifax\, Nova Scotia. DESCRIPTION:This webinar will discuss Anti-Indigenous Racism in the British Columbia Health Care System\, and its implications for social work. \n\n\n In June 2020\, claims surfaced about a “Price is Right” game allegedly being played in some B.C. hospital Emergency Departments\, in which health care workers were guessing blood alcohol levels of Indigenous patients. The BC Minister of Health commissioned an independent review to investigate the “Price is Right” allegations and whether this game or other forms of Indigenous-specific racism are being experienced by Indigenous people using the provincial health care system\, make findings of fact\, and make any recommendations it considers necessary and advisable. The Addressing Racism Review was formally launched on July 9\, 2020\, and released a report on November 30\, 2020. Topics to be covered include the state of field education\, digital storytelling\, practice research\, transformational learning\, and indigenous field education. This Summit is designed for social work educators\, students\, researchers\, and practitioners. This event is eligible for Continuing Education Credits. \nView Program in English \nView Program in French \nThis workshop will share wise practices in Indigenous field education at the bachelors and graduate level that challenge the content and the practice of field education in undergraduate and graduate programs. The author will discuss Indigenous violence and trauma-informed field education in shifting spaces of learning including online learning\, field education\, university classroom settings and land-based learning.  Several wise practice case examples will be presented to advance and contest the knowledge of how violence is enacted and addressed in social work field education and to better understand Indigenous and decolonial teaching strategies to addressing trauma\, and violence in a variety of spaces. Western notions of field education\, trauma and of safety will be challenged\, centering instead Indigenous violence-informed practices for healing and learning.  Topics covered will include how to address issues of sovereignty\, wellness; safety and identity in online and blended learning environments\, considerations of place and location when using digital technologies\, and addressing safety\, wellness\, and violence/trauma-informed learning in shifting educational spaces.
